Minnewaska Waterfall Wednesday – Approx. 6.5 miles – Beat the Heat!!

You will be walking up streambeds and through water so wear footwear that you don’t mind getting wet!
** ARRIVE EARLY!! Arrive at main park gate no later than 8:40am and wait in line. Park gates open at 9am . $10 parking fee or use Empire Pass. We start hiking at 9:15am.
The hike: We will start hiking at 9:15am. Pace will be moderate – about 2.0 mph average.
From Minnewaska’s Lower Awosting parking lot (700′ from entrance booth), we’ll cross Rt. 44/55 and enter the woods taking a right on the blue SRT Trail. Continue on the SRT and hike along the cliff tops overlooking the Peter’s Kill. Cross the Peter’s Kill via footbridge and stay on blue SRT. Head uphill and take in the views from Compass Rock (slightly off-trail). Continue on the SRT and turn right onto the white Bull Wheel Trail. Hike through the former Ski Minne ski area (closed early 80’s). At the end of the white trail, turn right onto Red and go back downhill to the Peter’s Kill stream. Once at the stream, we’ll head upstream and take in several small waterfalls and two larger ones before crossing Rt. 44/55. We’ll then take the Awosting Carriage Road up to the 80′ Awosting Falls. Then it’s a short uphill hike back to the parking lot.
Distance: approx. 6.5 miles
Elevation Gain: Approx 1,200 feet
Duration: Approx 4 hours including breaks.
Difficulty: Newer hikers should not overestimate his/her abilities. Slippery trails and rocks.
Gear: proper footwear; moisture-wicking clothing ; water; lunch/snacks. Poles may be helpful

You are responsible for bringing appropriate gear, supplies, clothing, first aid, and lights. You should review topographic maps and trail features carefully; understanding topography of any hike is key to your knowing where you are, where you’re going, and how to get back.
